Motorola Moto G6 and G6 Plus update: Android P is a go, but could take forever

with 0 Comment

Moto-G6-PlusMotorola took the wraps off the Moto G6 and Moto G6 Plus at an event in Brazil on April 19 and the pair, alongside the Moto G6 Play and Moto E5 family, will go global in May/June 2018.

Even as you get ready to welcome the new Moto G6 series, there are a few concerns here and there – or perhaps one major one: software updates. For years, Motorola was the best non-Google OEM when software matters came to the table, but since Lenovo stepped in to fill the shoes left by the search giant, things have gotten quite unbearable.

For instance, it’s been eight months since Android Oreo came out and some eligible Motorola phones, including the 2016 and 2017 Moto G handsets, have yet to get the update, something we rarely saw back in the day. Now, apparently, it seems adopters of the Moto G6 and Moto G6 Plus will have an even longer waiting period before the arrival of the next OS upgrade – and this should be a concern for anyone, especially since security updates are also victims of the latest decision by Lenovo.

Moto G6 and Moto G6 Plus Android P update

Expected release date: Q1 2019

This year’s Moto G6 family comes preinstalled with Android Oreo out of the box, sadly, you still get the OG version 8.0. It’s unlikely that the Moto G6 and G6 Plus will receive an upgrade to Android 8.1, but it’s a guarantee that Android P will arrive at some point.

Unlike the Moto G4 Plus, which is expected to receive an update to Android Oreo after having already received the Nougat treat, the Moto G6 and G6 Plus will only get a single OS upgrade in Android P. When exactly this will roll out is still unclear, but if Motorola’s statements are any indicators, it may take longer than usual before these two devices receive Android P. This is despite the presence of Project Treble, a feature that is mandatory on any device preinstalled with Oreo out of the box.

In short, we could be looking at a Q1 2019 release date for Android P on the Moto G6 and G6 Plus, but we won’t mind a Q4 2018 release date, too.

Now, it’s worth noting that the Moto G4 Plus’ case is a little unique, but typically, Motorola only rolls out one major OS upgrade to the Moto G series, which doesn’t surprise us that the G6 – and probably the G6 Plus – will only get one major OS upgrade.

Moto G6 and Moto G6 Plus security updates

Google releases monthly security updates for not only its Pixel phones, but also all other Android devices, but as we all know, individual smartphone vendors handle respective security updates for their devices.

At a time when OEMs like Samsung, Huawei, HMD Global and even Xiaomi are working hard to keep their devices – be it entry-level or even older handsets – up to date with the latest security updates on a monthly basis, it appears Lenovo isn’t backing off its mission to take Motorola to the grave. Apparently, the Moto G6 and G6 Plus will not receive monthly security updates like other Android devices, rather, the company will only be sending out these updates after a period of between 60 and 90 days.

To be fair, there are plenty of other devices out there that follow a similar pattern when it comes to security updates, however, this usually happens to older or the most entry-level devices, none of which the Moto G6 and Moto G6 Plus are. So, why Motorola would make such a decision still amazes us, but it does say a lot about Lenovo as a company, right?
