TAG Heuer to launch a luxury Android Wear smartwatch in late-2015

with 0 Comment

TAG Heuer smartwatch TAG Heuer on Thursday became the first traditional watch maker to announce that it is working on a luxury Android Wear smartwatch. The company has partnered with Google and Intel to achieve the same.

“Swiss watchmaking and Silicon Valley is a marriage of technological innovation with watchmaking credibility. Our collaboration provides a rich host of synergies, forming a win-win partnership, and the potential for our three companies is enormous,” said Jean-Claude Biver, President of the Watch Division LVMH Group and CEO of TAG Heuer.

The company has not shared any details about the smartwatch at this point, but it did say the device will be arriving sometime around end of 2015. Also, given the partnership with Intel, you can expect the TAG Heuer smartwatch to be powered by an Intel processor.

TAG Heuer isn’t the only traditional watch maker to enter the smartwatch fray, but it is the first to use Android Wear. With the global market for smartwatches expected to 28.1 million units this year from 4.6 million in 2014 (according to Strategy Analytics), the watch makers like TAG Heuer are realizing that in the era of connected devices they aren’t equipped to stand on their own and need the likes of Intel and Google, who can provide the necessary hardware and software for the smartwatches.
