Virtual Reality is apparently going to be next big thing in the mobile space, after bezel-less displays, and dual-camera setups. To be ahead of the curve, Japan Display Inc. has just announced that they will be making LCD panels that have a pixel density of 803ppi.
That’s a lot of pixels, specially when they’re on a screen with a size of 3.60 inches. The company states that the panel is specifically designed for Virtual reality headsets. They also state that, by the first half of 2018, they will have also developed a display with over 1000ppi.
This also means a great deal in the mobile world, as most displays used on smartphones top at around 600ppi at the moment. And that isn’t enough for crisp images on a VR headset. You can see the difference below.
Japan Display also states that after providing higher ppi displays, the need for faster data speed arises. According to their press release, smartphones still can’t process the display data as fast as the displays themselves can read them. So, they believe that when 5G networks are available, VR displays will be adopted more widely.
We are going to have to wait a while for 5G networks to be available worldwide, but high pixel density displays are probably just around the corner. Since Japan Display has built an LCD panel with 803ppi, we doubt Samsung or others who use OLED panels, would use these in their upcoming phones. We’d like to see who comes up with these panels first. What do you think?
