Last year, Motorola left marks all over the smartphone market, be it the high-end or the low-end segment. While it was routine for fans of the former segment, it’s the latter segment that mostly got to the headlines, especially thanks to the Moto E4 and E4 Plus.

Motorola’s E lineup has been around for a while now and its popularity is due to what it brings – a solid build, quality hardware specs, a near-stock Android experience, all at an affordable price tag. With this in mind, all eyes are on the Lenovo-owned company to once again deliver one of the best in the entry-level market in the shape of Moto E5.

Of course, this phone will be accompanied by the Moto E5 Plus, but there’s also a surprise being lined up. Want to find out more about the Moto E5 series and the surprise? Read on.

Moto E5 specs

At this point in time, details of the Moto E5 specs remain a mystery. Still, we expect Lenovorola to come up with an upgraded package over what the Moto E4 and E4 Plus are offering.

The Moto E4 comes with a 5-inch HD display screen, a MediaTek MT6737 SoC, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage, 8MP/5MP camera, 2800mAh battery and Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box, while the E4 Plus ships with a bigger 5.5-inch HD panel, same MT6737 SoC, but ups the RAM to 3GB and also gets a second 32GB storage option. The Moto E4 Plus also comes with better cameras featuring a 13MP main shooter and a 5MP selfie sensor. The bigger size also means you get an insanely bigger battery of 5000mAh alongside the same version of Nougat out of the box.

A Motorola phone with model numbers XT1922-4 (single SIM) and XT1922-5 (dual SIM) has been cleared by the FCC and Wi-Fi Alliance. At the moment, it’s unclear which variants these model numbers represent, however, the fact that the phone will be powered by a huge 4000mAh battery does point to the Moto E5 Plus. As a natural successor to the Moto E4 Plus, it only makes sense that such a huge battery can only be for the E5 Plus.

Lenovorola will stick to the same screen dimensions for the Moto E5 and Moto E5 Plus, but the processor is about to change, if indeed the XT1922 is the Moto E5. As per recent listings on Wi-Fi Alliance, the Motorola XT1922 will ship with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 chipset (MSM8937), a chipset that is tipped to power the Moto G6 Play. This chipset will then be paired with 2GB RAM and 16GB of expandable storage. As for the main differentiators, the Moto E5 Plus should keep the bigger screen, bigger battery size as well as get better cameras compared to both the Moto E5.

While the FCC listing gave out the model numbers and battery capacity of the alleged Moto E5, the WFA gives us the software version and processor, besides adding more emphasis to the FCC-listed model numbers. As it is, the XT1922 will be powered by Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box and being a Motorola phone, you can expect a near-stock version of Oreo.

Moto E5 leaked images and 3D renders

It’s now approaching two months since the first details of the Moto E5 series appeared online courtesy of renowned leaker Evan Blass. It was never a doubt that more leaks will begin showing up and indeed we have our first look at the Moto E5 thanks to folks at MySmartPrice.

From the image, it seems Motorola has plans to make a few design changes to the Moto E5 family. Noticeably missing is the front-mounted fingerprint scanner from the Moto E4. Instead, it’s on the back, and guess what, it’s underneath the M logo, which is where some have wanted it to be.

Don’t get too excited, though. Despite the relocation of the fingerprint scanner, the leaked image still shows a Moto E5 handset with huge bezels and what looks like the traditional 16:9 display design. The bottom bezel now has a trademark Motorola text instead of the “Moto” text that appeared on the top bezel of the Moto E4. Even more disappointing is the sight of the microUSB port, which means there’s still no place for the USB-C port on the budget-friendly Moto E series.

The image also reveals that both cameras will have a LED flash, but there’s still no room for dual-lens setups on either side. Apparently, the Moto E5 will be made of metal, but this is not possible to tell by looking at the images. Other than the few tweaks, the entire design language looks like the Moto E4, which isn’t bad at all.

If images are not clear enough, renowned leaker OnLeaks has a 3D video render for you as well (you can watch it below). The video shows off the same design as what had been leaked before, including confirmations that the microUSB port and 3.5mm audio jack are still here.

Moto E5 release date

As noted earlier, it is towards the end of November 2017 that Evan Blass published his findings regarding the Moto E5 series. Apparently, Lenovorola is lining up a surprise for fans of this series and this could include an early launch, probably in early April.

E5-010

Last year, the Moto E4 family was announced in June. If Motorola is to stick to this schedule, we still got a few more months of waiting before the Moto E5 series is unveiled, but we all know anything can happen in the smartphone world. Also, the facts that we already have images and 3D renders of the Moto E5 and that it has allegedly been cleared by the FCC and Wi-Fi Alliance also suggest that the launch date is not so far away.

The Moto E5 prices should range between $120 and $150, just like the Moto E4, however, expect a higher price tag for the Moto E5 Plus, but the cheapest should be the Moto E5 Play.

A Moto E5 Play?

Speaking of the Moto E5 Play, Blass also believes that the Moto E5 series will get a Play variant. Fans of this series aren’t used to a Play variant, but it happens within Motorola’s ranks. Besides, Blass is rarely wrong. Unfortunately, details about the E5 Play remain scarce, but as noted, it should be the cheapest of the trio.

Are you looking forward to buying either of the Moto E5, Moto E5 Plus, and probably, the Moto E5 Play?
