It’s about that time of the year that Motorola fans are looking forward to the launch of the new Moto G series.
Unlike in 2016 where the Moto G lineup had three handsets: Moto G4, Moto G4 Plus and Moto G4 Play, the 2017 release had only two options to choose from: Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus. However, Lenovo made up for this by following up the pair with two more releases: the Moto G5s and G5s Plus. In 2018, Lenovo is once again expected to shake things a little bit by presenting fans of the budget-friendly series with more options to choose from. Without further ado, here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming Moto G6 series.
Moto G6 Play is making a comeback
As mentioned, the 2017 Moto G5 family ditched the Play variant, with Lenovo opting to give us four variants in two different release windows. However, according to renowned tipster Evan Blass, the Moto G6 family will bring back the Play variant alongside the expected Moto G6 and Moto G6 Plus variants. So, if you weren’t happy with the G5 series due to the lack of a Play variant, well, 2018 is your year!
Moto G6, Moto G6 Plus, and Moto G6 Play specs
Many described the Moto G5 Plus as easily the best budget smartphone of the year 2017. Well, expectations are that the Moto G6 Plus will pick up from where the G5 Plus left and give the masses another master class. At the moment, details about the specs of the three Moto G6 phones remain unclear, but looking at what the Moto G5 series has in store, we can only speculate.
The standard Moto G5 comes with 5-inch full HD display screen that is scratch resistant and for the processor, there’s a Snapdragon 430 SoC running the show alongside either 2GB or 3GB of RAM. In terms of storage, the standard G5 gets two options of 16GB and 32GB, both with room to expand via a microSD card of up to 256GB.
As for the Moto G5 Plus, you get a slightly bigger 5.2-inch full HD display, but this one gets protection from Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3. Under the hood, the phone has a more powerful Snapdragon 625 SoC mated with either 2GB, 3GB or 4GB of RAM. On the contrary, you get storage options of 32GB and 64GB, which can also be expanded.
We cannot say much about the screen sizes, but on the inside, we expect the standard Moto G6 to step to the new Snapdragon 450 while the Moto G6 Plus could jump to the newer Snapdragon 630, if not the Snapdragon 636. If anything, don’t be surprised if the memory options remain unchanged. Given the superiority of the Moto G5 Plus camera with respect to the standard Moto G5, we expect the Moto G6 Plus to get a better camera than the Moto G6. Since the Moto G5s Plus got a dual-lens camera, we can only hope for the same when the Moto G6 Plus comes out.
As for the software, last year’s Moto G5 series was launched with Android Nougat out of the box. Well, expect nothing less than Android Oreo on the Moto G6 series with a promised update to Android P.
Make no mistake. The Moto G5s and G5s Plus are still in the same class as their counterparts, but they bring a few upgrades in terms of both software and hardware. From where we are seated, we expect to see better hardware and software specs on the Moto G6 series not only with respect to the Moto G5 family, but also the Moto G5s series as well.
Looking at what the Moto G4 Play has to offer, we can only expect the Moto G6 Play to get even better. Although the specs are still unknown, you can be sure to say goodbye to the likes of Snapdragon 410, 1GB RAM, and 8GB storage used on the Moto G4 Play, but the phone could keep the same 5-inch HD display and removable battery.
Moto G6, Moto G6 Plus and Moto G6 Play prices and release date
We do know that the Moto G6, Moto G6 Plus and Moto G6 Play will be released this 2018. However, we still have no idea about the exact date and the pricing details. While the latter is an easy guess – midrange and budget phones – the former is not quite easy. If, however, Motorola were to keep up with last year’s date, we may see the Moto G6 series launching in February 2018 at the MWC event, although it may take a few more weeks before the phones hit all global markets.
