Last year, Xiaomi had its most successful device ever in the Redmi Note 4, so expectations were already sky-high about its successor the Redmi Note 5. Turns out though, Xiaomi hasn’t revealed a Redmi Note 5, at least yet, and it’s widely believed that the Redmi 5 Plus is indeed the Redmi Note 5.

With the bezel-less display panels making inroads, the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus give us two fantastic options in screen sizes, something that the OEMs, including Xiaomi, used to offer in two separate series — the screen size was the major factory behind the company launching the Redmi Note series. So, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus is what you want if you want a Redmi Note 5, while Redmi 4’s successor is quite natural in the Redmi 5.

Let’s what both of the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus brings to the table. And what makes them really ticking and worth your money.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Specs

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus smartphone was launched in December 2017. It was announced alongside the Redmi 5 and is its smaller variant.

The Redmi 5 Plus features a large 5.99-inch bezel-less display with 18:9 aspect ratio and 1080 x 2160 pixels resolution. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC that’s coupled with 3GB of RAM. In the storage department, you get 32GB of internal space and there’s a microSD expandable slot that can take up to 128GB.

The phone comes with a 12MP camera at the back, and there’s a 5MP camera for selfies. All of this is powered by a 4000mAh battery. A 4GB variant with 64GB of internal storage is also available.

Here’s a gist of all important specs of the Redmi 5 Plus:

  • 5.99-inch display (bezel-less, IPS LCD, 1080 x 2160 pixels, 18:9)
  • Snapdragon 625 processor (Octa-core, Adreno 506 GPU)
  • 3/4GB RAM, 32/64GB internal storage (up to 128GB microSD card support)
  • Android 7.1.2 Nougat, MIUI9 (Android Oreo update expected)
  • 12MP rear camera (f/2.2 aperture, 1.25 μm, phase detection autofocus, dual-LED)
  • 5MP front camera
  • 4,000 mAh battery (non-removable)
  • 180 grams
  • 158.5 x 75.5 x 8.1 mm

You can buy the phone in either Blue, Gold, Rose Gold, and Black color variants.

Release Date and Price

Update [January 25, 2018]: Xiaomi looks set to launch a new handset in India very soon. We say that because that’s what the Xiaomi’s Product PR guy has indicated when he revealed that the next month is going to be lit, and used the burning fire emoji as many as 5 times, exactly. So, a Redmi 5 Plus for India, right? Another guess would be Redmi Note 5 announcement, probably starting with China? What do you think?

And there’s more. Two new Xiaomi handsets going by codename MEE7S and MET7S have been passed CCC, a Chinese agency. These are essentially the ‘S’ variants of Redmi 5 Plus which comes as MEE7 and MET7 (two color variants, that’s all). But again, this could be the Redmi Note 5, but we won’t bet on it. It’s more like Redmi 5 Plus for India.

Update [January 17, 2018]: New report from Roland Quandt indicates that the Xiaomi Rredmi 5 Plus would be launching pretty soon. it’s rumored that the device could launch in mid-February 2018. Which is within a month of today, so that’s great news for anyone looking to buy a solid device with decent performance, with a nice bezel-less display but without breaking the bank.

Update [February 2, 2018]: Although we know that the Redmi 5 Plus will be launched globally this month, we still don’t have an exact date yet. However, a recent certification by the Wi-Fi Alliance does imply that the phone’s global launch is imminent.

It’s possible this could happen at the MWC 2018, but it’s also possible it could happen a little earlier. Whichever way, there’s no doubt that the Redmi 5 Plus is almost here.

If you’re interested in purchasing the Redmi 5 Plus, you can do so now from China. The phone is already on sale there, but will soon be available in other markets as well.

Redmi 5 Plus Price
3GB RAM/32GB storage 999 yuan/$155
4GB RAM/64GB storage 1299 yuan/$200

The phone will most likely be available for purchase in India very soon. We expect a February release and a similar budget pricing starting at around INR 9,999. Nothing official is available at the moment though.

Android 8.0 Oreo update is in plans

As the phone was only announced in December last year, the chances of it receiving the Android 8.0 Oreo update is highly likely. There hasn’t been any official confirmation yet, but we expect the Redmi 5 Plus to get the Oreo update by the end of 2018.

Yes, a long, long way to go!

With luck, though, especially given the early release of Android Oreo beta of Mi 6, we might see Xiaomi come up with Oreo OTA for the Redmi 5 Plus by end of Q2 2018. It’s possible, yes.

Redmi 5 Root is available!

Did you just purchase or are planning to buy the Redmi 5 Plus? And you are interested in rooting the device as soon as you get it? Well, we have good news for you. The phone can be rooted thanks to the availability of TWRP recovery for the device.

Before you install TWRP recovery and root the phone, you are going to have to unlock the bootloader. We have already posted a detailed guide on how to unlock the bootloader and install TWRP recovery and then root using Magisk or SuperSU.

Follow the guide over here.

Competition – Honor 7X

Not impressed with what the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus offers? Don’t worry, we have got the perfect alternative for you around the same price bracket. Enter the Huawei Honor 7X!

The Honor 7X is priced similarly to the Redmi 5 Plus in China, but has slightly better features, especially in terms of camera. The phone has a 5.93-inch display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and 1080 x 2160 resolution, similar to the Redmi 5 Plus.

While the Redmi 5 Plus has a Snapdragon heart, the Honor 7X comes with Huawei’s Kirin 659 SoC. It also has 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. There’s a 3340mAh battery powering the phone. So, in terms of specs, the Redmi 5 Plus is better we would say.

Let’s talk about the camera. On the Honor 7X you get dual rear cameras, so you have access to features such as Portrait mode. Of course, this portrait mode isn’t as great as you would expect, but it still works. There’s also an 8MP selfie shooter at the front.

The phone runs on Android 7.0 Nougat, but will most probably get an upgrade to Oreo in the second quarter of 2018. According to us, we’d still recommend you pick up the Redmi 5 Plus.
