Not too long ago when the news of an upcoming mid-range Galaxy device started making rounds, Samsung fans finally had something to look forward to. However, it seems the South Korean tech company is reviving the budget-range lineup with not just the previously mentioned Samsung Galaxy S8 Lite (SM-G8750), but another premium category device which has been dubbed the Galaxy A8 Star.

Unlike the Galaxy S8 Lite, the Galaxy A8 Star based on model number SM-G8850 seems to be already up and around on the Chinese TENAA website. We’ve sifted through the platform to extract all the juicy details and bring you exactly all you need to know about the upcoming device from Samsung.

Samsung Galaxy A8 Star specs

  • 6.28-inch AMOLED screen with 2220 x 1080 pixels resolution
  • 3700mAh battery capacity
  • 4GB RAM
  • 2GHz octa-core processor
  • Android 8.0 Oreo
  • Dual 24MP + 16MP main camera and 24MP front camera
  • 64GB internal storage expandable up to 256GB
  • Available in Black and White colors

Since the 18:9 screen aspect ratio has become a staple among modern mobile devices, Samsung is keeping it alive with the Galaxy A8 Star. While you can expect a display that is similar to the current Galaxy A8 with its sharp and vibrant AMOLED panel, you don’t get the Ultra-HD screen resolution of the flagship Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9.

One element that the upcoming A8 Star does offer over the existing A8+ is an improved battery capacity of 3700mAh. Similar to the upcoming S8 Lite, you get 4GB of RAM and 64GB onboard storage, but the biggest difference seems to be the processor hardware. The Galaxy A8 Star seems to be packing a 2.2GHz octa-core processor which could be Samsung’s very own Exynos 7885 SoC, the same one used in the A8 and A8+.

While the pictures sported on TENAA website show a shiny black variant, the listing also suggests that a white version may also be made available. We even noted the presence of a Bixby button on the right side, so it seems Samsung is making Bixby available to mid-range Galaxy devices as well. All of this comes beside the fact that an iPhone X-like dual-camera will be in place for surreal photography on the Galaxy A8 Star.

Samsung Galaxy A8 Star release date and price

Galaxy-A8-StarNow that the Galaxy A8 Star has already passed through the TENAA certification process, the official release could be just a few weeks away. Samsung has not disclosed the actual release date of the device, let alone teased it, so you’ll have to wait for a little while to get your hands on the SM-G8850 for now.

Speaking of waiting, it seems it won’t be long as earlier thought because the Wi-Fi Alliance has already cleared the Galaxy A8 Star with model number SM-G885F/DS. The device also runs Android 8.0 out of the box, which is not strange at all.

Unlike the Galaxy S8 Lite that is also making the rounds online, there are no specifics on the question of where the Galaxy A8 Star will be made available. However, we do expect a worldwide release considering how popular the A series has grown over the past few years. Furthermore, the fact that the device has received certification with model number SM-G885F/DS suggests that a wider rollout is on the cards.

As for the price, you can expect the Galaxy A8 Star to be a bit over the typical mid-range price, considering the fact that it comes with a powerful processor and dual-camera hardware. However, the small details such as the standard display and processing power should keep it well below the $600+ flagship price range.

Do you think it was time for Samsung to already replace the 2018 Galaxy A8, or will you make the use of Galaxy A8 Star to get a deeper discount on the latter?
