Samsung Galaxy J2 Core: Sammy’s first Android Go phone is almost here

with 0 Comment

Internet-less-Galaxy-J2-ProGoogle’s Android Go might be already up and running, but nothing regarding Android smartphones is complete without the mention of Samsung, the leading vendor in the world. Ever since Android Go became a real thing at the MWC 2018, we have mainly seen small players unveiling Go-powered phones, but none of the big players has made their mark.

It’s not long ago that Huawei confirmed its intentions to launch an Android Go smartphone as part of its budget Y series. Now, even though Samsung hasn’t said a thing about its plans with Android Go, it is now emerging that the company is secretly working on a device based on this slimmed-down OS.

Tentatively known as Samsung Galaxy J2 Core, this is the first time details of such a phone are surfacing. While we cannot guarantee this is indeed a thing, the fact that Samsung sells smartphones in Android Go target markets meant the company was never going to shy away from coming in with a Go-powered phone.

So, what’s the deal with Samsung Galaxy J2 Core? Let’s dig in.

Samsung Galaxy J2 Core specs

As pointed out, there isn’t much out there regarding the Galaxy J2 Core. But according to a newly discovered listing on Geekbench, the phone does exist as model number SM-J260G.

Check out the specs we know so far:

  • 5-inch qHD sAMOLED display
  • Exynos 7570 chipset
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8MP main and 5MP front cameras
  • 2600mAh battery
  • Android 8.1 Oreo
  • Bluetooth 4.2
  • 4G LTE

From the benchmarks, the Exynos 7570 quad-core processor is clocked at a speed of 1.43GHz and from what we know about the chipset, it’s based on Samsung’s 14nm process and supports LTE Cat.4 and Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity.

Samsung is not the kind to expect to launch a new entry-level phone at this point with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. If anything, it’s likely that this OS will first appear on the Galaxy Note 9 – or it may not.

Looking at what we have in the benchmark, it can only mean one thing – that the Oreo 8.1-powered Samsung phone is an Android Go device. Also, the listing showcases a “Universal7570_go” motherboard, which leaves nothing to the imagination.

Google has often pointed out that Android Go is geared towards devices with entry-level hardware and among them are those with 1GB RAM. This is what you get on the Galaxy J2 Core, which further adds weight that it’s a Go device.

On the other hand, the model number SM-J260G is similar to the recently launched internet-less Samsung Galaxy J2 Pro 2018, which suggests that the upcoming Galaxy J2 Core could be one and the same device, but with a few tweaks here and there. The internet-less J2 Pro has a 5-inch qHD display screen, 8MP main camera, 5MP for selfies, 16GB of expandable storage, and a 2600mAh battery, some of which we expect to see retained on the J2 Core.

Samsung Galaxy J2 Core price and release date

Galaxy-J2-Pro-2018
  • No price details from Samsung
  • We don’t expect anything beyond $100
  • Possible May-June 2018 debut

Mostly, Android Go devices have developing markets in mind. This is where price matters are very sensitive and looking at the specs the Galaxy J2 Core has in store, we don’t expect anything beyond $100. We should, however, verify this hunch when the phone is unveiled.

Speaking of which, there’s no word on when the J2 Core will make its debut. But now that the phone is appearing in benchmarks, it means that it’s an existing device that is probably being tested. In short, we are staring at a possible May or probably June 2018 launch. We’ll be here to let you know.
