LG V40: Up to five cameras in tow

LG-V40-Storm-1

At the MWC 2018, LG came in with a new strategy. Rather than unveil a successor to the LG G6 launched at the previous MWC event, the company gave us a revamped version of the 2017 LG V30 and to justify this change from the onset, the tweaked phone was baptized LG V30S ThinQ.

You’ve probably heard a lot or at least something about the LG V30S ThinQ. If not, well, we have every bit covered here, but just to give you a heads-up, the phone’s selling point is its ThinQ AI capabilities. This, in fact, will be LG’s selling point from now onwards as far as flagship phones are concerned, something we’ve already witnessed on the LG G7 ThinQ, the successor to LG G6.

Given that the V30S ThinQ or even the AT&T exclusive LG V35 ThinQ are not proper successors to the V30, we expect the company to launch one at some point in the future. Enter LG V40 ThinQ aka Storm.

Codenamed ‘Storm’, can the LG V40 ThinQ storm past the competition? Let’s find out in this roundup of everything we know so far about the phone.

LG V40 ThinQ specs

LG-G7-ThinQ-3
  • 6-inch QHD+ OLED display with no notch
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor
  • 6/8GB RAM
  • 64/128/256GB storage with microSD support
  • Tri-lens main camera
  • Dual lens selfie camera
  • 3400mAh battery
  • Android 8.0 Oreo
  • Extras: Stereo speakers, rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, 5G connectivity, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, Quick Charge 4+, IP68, MIL-STD 810G, 3D Face unlock, etc.

Other than the revelation by notorious leaker Evan Blass that the LG V40 ThinQ will be codenamed Storm, we also know a few other things about the LG V30 successor. From what we can gather, the V40 ThinQ will be another flagship phone that could mostly borrow some notes from both the LG V35 ThinQ and LG G7 ThinQ. In fact, it has been reported that the V40’s design language will take after the G7, meaning you are staring at a notched display screen.

Folks at TechRubik believe they also have some knowledge of what to expect when the LG V40 ThinQ breaks cover, which is what we’ve shared in the above specs list. We cannot guarantee that this will be the final list, especially since it appears there is still some time between now and the expected launch of the V40.

One of the most interesting developments is that the LG V40 will ship with up to five cameras: three on the back and two on the front. In the race to stand out in the densely populated smartphone market where many vendors are becoming redundant, South Korea’s LG Electronics is reportedly pondering on giving the masses what has never existed before – an LG V40 smartphone with a massive five camera lenses.

When Huawei gave us one with three lenses on the back (and four in total), some thought it was heightened insanity, but it appears that multiple camera lenses – as many as five cameras – are the exact recipe we need for a 5-star smartphone. No, the five cameras won’t be on the back of the LG V40, we presume, rather, we should get three on the back and two on the front.

While we still don’t know how these cameras will work, what seems certain is that one of the front-facing shooters will be used for facial recognition purposes, probably the 3D type. Given that LG’s latest flagship phones with dual-lens cameras still offer an ultra-wide lens for wide-angle shots and no portrait mode, it’s likely that the third lens on the back of the LG V40 could be dedicated to depth of field effects.

LG V40 ThinQ price and release date

V30S-ThinQ-New-Platinum-Gray-01-1We’ve heard reports that the LG V40 ThinQ will be here in September 2018, which would be in line with the previous releases in the V series. The OG model came out in October and so did its successor, the V20. Last year’s V30 was launched in September, which makes the IFA Berlin a possible destination for the launch of the V40.

Due to the multitude of advanced features and top-notch performance expected from the LG V40 ThinQ, it is rumored that the price will be even higher compared to the outgoing V30. Apparently, those in Europe will part with a cool €1,100, which means the U.S. will easily pay $1000 or more for the same phone. Ouch!

Note that we don’t have anything concrete on the LG V40 ThinQ just yet. Given the time left between now and the expected launch date of September 2018, we should be able to bump into more rumors, leaks and speculations regarding the V40, most of which will be included in the updates made to this post in future.

Nonetheless, the quality of the LG V30, V35 and G7 says a lot about what to expect when their AI-backed counterpart comes around and hopefully, the company will live up to the expectations.

Note: This page will be updated on a regular basis if and when new info pops up.
