Android Oreo 8.0 update: When will my device get it

While a majority of the Android smartphones are now receiving the Android Nougat update slowly, flagship phones from various smartphone vendors are getting ready for the release of next big software update. And that’s Android Oreo, based on Android 8.0.

You can expect the Samsung, OnePlus, Sony, LG, Xiaomi, HTC, etc. companies of our world to provide a more solid release timeline for their popular and flagship devices as regards Oreo release date pretty soon. But it’s safe to say that flagship devices like Galaxy S8, Galaxy S7, HTC U11, HTC 10, OnePlus 5/3/3T, ZenFone 4, LG G6, etc. are in for the update — in fact, we think all flagship devices from the major OEMs, released in 2017 and 2018, are eligible for the Android 8.0 update.

Now that we have established this, let’s address the elephant in the room: When will the update hit your device or even better, will your device ever get the update in the first place?

We can’t say for sure which Android devices would get the update first, except for the few, which are Google backup phones: Pixel and Nexus. Not all nexus sets are gonna see the Android Oreo update, as only Nexus 5X and 6P are in line for 8.0, while you have Pixel and Pixel XL among the very first one eligible for update.

For the rest of the devices — which are many — we think Moto Z2 Force, LG G6 and OnePlus 5 will be among the first ones, with devices from Sony and Samsung also getting Orep update by December 2017.

Here is an OEM-wise list of phones that should get the Oreo update.

Google

With the launch of Android Oreo today, Google has already released the Oreo system images for the Android 8.0 update compatible devices, listed below.

  • Google Pixel XL
  • Google Pixel
  • Google Pixel C
  • Google Nexus 6P
  • Google Nexus 5X
  • Google Nexus Player

Motorola

Motorola handsets run near-Stock Android, and the company has always been very keen on faster Android update release. Which means eligible Motorola devices will get the Android 8.0 Oreo update pretty soon. As far as eligible devices are concerned, Motorola Moto Z, Moto G, and Moto M series handsets released in the past two years (mentioned below) should receive the update.

  • Moto Z2
  • Moto Z2 Force
  • Moto Z2 Play (2017)
  • Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus
  • Moto Z
  • Moto Z Force
  • Moto Z Play
  • Moto G5 Plus
  • Moto G5
  • Moto G4 Plus
  • Moto G4
  • Moto G4 Play (probably)
  • Moto M

There are only slim chances that Moto E4 and E4 Plus too receive the Oreo update, while we don’t think Moto C and C Plus will get it.

Nokia

HMD Global had last month confirmed that all the three phones launched by it during the MWC 2017 event would receive the Android Oreo update. Taking into consideration the fact these handsets run near-Stock Android out-of-the-box, it shouldn’t take long for the company to roll out the update to its devices (listed below) now that Google has released the Android 8.0 update.

  • Nokia 6
  • Nokia 5
  • Nokia 3

LG

There haven’t been any sorts of announcements by LG as far as the Android Oreo update is concerned. So, at this point in time, it’s hard to predict when and to which devices will the latest update will be rolled out. Having said that, we expect the devices mentioned below to receive the update by the end of this year or in early 2018.

  • LG V30 (could launch with Oreo pre-installed)
  • LG G6
  • LG V20 (likely)

Essential

Andy Rubin, during the launch of Essential Phone, had confirmed that the smartphone would be receiving software updates regularly and promptly. These are again, just his words, but we will give the benefit of the doubt to the Essential Phone for this time. Besides, the smartphone runs near-stock Android. So, it shouldn’t take long for the company to roll out the Oreo build.

  • Essential Phone (PH-1)

Sony

Sony is yet to reveal its plans for the Android Oreo update. But it’s among the first one to release the major Android update for its devices, and kudos to them for that. Last year, with Nougat, they were among the first ones to bring the Nougat update for then flagships under the beta program, and we hope for the same with Oreo update too. We think these Sony Android smartphones would receive the Oreo update before the end of December 2017.

  • Sony Xperia XZS
  • Sony Xperia XZ Premium
  • Sony Xperia XA1
  • Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra
  • Sony Xperia L1
  • Sony Xperia XA
  • Sony Xperia XA Ultra
  • Sony Xperia XZ
  • Sony Xperia X Performance
  • Sony Xperia X

OnePlus

OnePlus was pretty timely in rolling out Android Nougat update to its flagship OnePlus 3 and 3T handsets last year. We expect the same to continue this year as well. Also, the company has already confirmed that both these handsets will get the Android 8.0 Oreo update when it’s released sometime later this year. In case you are wondering, handsets mentioned below will get the update.

  • OnePlus 5
  • OnePlus 3T
  • OnePlus 3

Samsung

Akin to LG, even Samsung hasn’t revealed its plans for the Android Oreo Nougat update. However, its fair to say the we’re gonna see Oreo on popular handsets by the Korean mobile giant. Here are the devices that should get the Oreo OTA rolling out sometime in 2018 (the S8 sets could have the 8.0 update in December, in we’re in luck).

  • Samsung Galaxy S8
  • Samsung Galaxy S8+
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 8
  • Samsung Galaxy Note FE
  • Samsung Galaxy S7
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 Active
  • Samsung Galaxy A7 (2017)
  • Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017
  • Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017)
  • Samsung Galaxy J7 (2017)
  • Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017)
  • Samsung Galaxy Note FE
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S3
  • Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro
  • Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro
  • Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime (OnNxt)

In addition to the aforementioned devices, the handsets mentioned below could also get the update given the company’s history. But again, nothing has been confirmed. So, do take it with a pinch of salt.

  • Samsung Galaxy A9 Pro
  • Samsung Galaxy A8 (2016)
  • Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016)
  • Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016)
  • Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 VE (2016)
  • Samsung Galaxy A (2016)

Huawei

Huawei has decent history with software updates. They were pretty good with Nougat, and we see them do good with Oreo update too. Although we haven’t heard from Huawei as regard which of their sets are gonna receive the Oreo update, we think the following sets would surely have the luxury of running on Android 8.0 sooner or later.

  • Huawei Mate 10
  • Huawei Mate 9
  • Huawei P10 and P10 Plus
  • Huawei Mate 8 (probably)
  • Huawei P9 and P9 Plus (probably)
  • Huawei Honor 9
  • Huawei Honor 8
  • Huawei Honor 6X

HTC

When it comes to HTC, the recently unveiled HTC U11 will most likely get the next Android update. However, the company hasn’t made any announcements regarding the development of the Android Oreo update for its devices. So, we will have to wait for a while to know more details about the same. That said, we easily imaging the following devices get an update to Oreo.

  • HTC U11
  • HTC U Play
  • HTC U Ultra

Asus

Going by its history, Asus is pretty slow when it comes to rolling out big OS updates, that is for flagship handsets. Things get even worse for the mid-range handsets. Although possible, we don’t see that changing this year as well. In the best case scenario, Asus’s flagship handsets should receive the Android Oreo update within 4-5 months from the day Google announces it. Users with mid-range devices from Asus may have to wait for a while.

Recently, Asus confirmed that its smartphones under the ZenFone 4 and ZenFone 3 series will get the Android Oreo update. So, that’s some good news. Here’s a list.

  • Asus ZenFone 4 Pro
  • Asus ZenFone 4 ZE554KL
  • Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie
  • Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro
  • Asus ZenFone 4 Max
  • Asus ZenFone 4 Max Pro
  • Asus ZenFone 4 Max Plus
  • Asus ZenFone 3S Max
  • Asus ZenFone AR
  • Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom
  • Asus ZenFone 3 Max
  • Asus ZenFone 3 Deluxe
  • Asus ZenFone 3
  • Asus ZenFone 3 Laser
  • Asus ZenFone 3 Ultra

ZTE

ZTE, as of now, is yet to confirm or reveal its plans for the upcoming Android Oreo update. The company has released a good number of phones since last year. While not all of these handsets will receive the update, a few will most likely do. We will update the post as and when we learn more details.

  • ZTE Axon 7

Xiaomi

Xiaomi has been pretty late to roll out the Android Nougat update to most of its handsets. And judging by its history, we don’t expect the company to push the Oreo update anytime soon. Perhaps, its most recent flagship handsets including the Xiaomi Mi 6 could get the update sometime in early 2018. The company hasn’t revealed its plans for Android O just yet.

Though, we think these devices would surely the Oreo released for them.

  • Xiaomi Mi 6
  • Xiaomi Mi Mix
  • Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A
  • Xiaomi Redmi 5X
  • Xiaomi Mi 5

Xiaomi could release the Oreo OTA for more devices, but we would wait until they make any announcement to confirm such devices.

Lenovo

Minus the ZUK series phones (and Motorola, of course), Lenovo has had a bad reputation when it comes to rolling out new software updates especially the big ones. And we don’t see that changing this year. Which means most of the handsets from Lenovo may not get the Android 8.0 Oreo update. Not anytime soon, at least.

BlackBerry

BlackBerry hasn’t announced which of its recently released phones will get the next big software update, the Android Oreo. If we were to speculate, however, the BlackBerry KEYone could at the least get the update sometime in 2018.

Meizu

Meizu again is another Chinese company that releases smartphones frequently but doesn’t bother to care about big OS updates. Most of its phones including the flagship ones haven’t received an update to Nougat itself. So, Android Oreo seems a bit out of the equation at this point in time.

Yu

Yu Televentures, a Micromax’s child-brand has barely released any new phones save for the Yu Yureka Black. And most of the phones which were launched by the company last year are still on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. So, there’s no point in discussing if any of those handsets will be upgraded to the latest Android OS.

As for the Yureka Black, the company is apparently planning to roll out the Android 7.1.2 Nougat to the handset. It, however, didn’t reveal the fate of the smartphone as far as Android O is concerned.

Oppo

Except for a couple of handsets, most of the smartphones launched by Oppo in this and last year are still on Android Marshmallow. While a majority of these handsets feature hardware good enough to support Android O, we highly doubt the likelihood of these devices getting an update to the latest Android OS.

At best, they could be upgraded to Android Nougat, that is if Oppo cares to push a software update.

LeEco

Given the company’s current position in the industry, the company will most likely ignore the Android Oreo update. So, it’s wise not to get your hopes high in case you own a LeEco phone.

Vivo

Vivo, akin to its Chinese counterparts, is no good when it comes to pushing the Android software updates to its devices. Most of its devices are still on Android Marshmallow and Lollipop which means Android Oreo isn’t going to come to these handsets anytime soon if not ever.

Gionee

The same holds true for Gionee as well. The company hasn’t been the one to focus on the software side of things, for the most part. So, expecting an Android Oreo update is close to dreaming if you own mid-range Gionee handsets. Flagship handsets (albeit very small) stand a chance to get the update.
