It’s only a week and a half before Samsung unveils the Galaxy S9, but details of the phone’s successor are already beginning to show up online.
Unless Samsung has other ideas, the next flagship in the S series will be called the Galaxy S10. In similar fashion, unless Qualcomm has other ideas, the next flagship chipset will be called the Snapdragon 855. Well, some details of the Snapdragon 845 successor are already here thanks to eagle-eyed Roland Quandt, who has further shared them on his Twitter account.
According to Quandt’s sources, the Snapdragon 855 is under development. Also, this will be the world’s first chipset to take advantage of the 7nm FinFET process.
Qualcomm won't say it, but their contractors do. Snapdragon 855 (SDM855) is the first 7nm SoC. (probably the one the X24 modem ends up in) pic.twitter.com/Ot1J34fQoG

Qualcomm has also announced the world’s first 7nm chipset in the shape of Snapdragon X24 LTE modem. This modem is expected to power the next wave of phones starting from late 2018 onwards, but since we know the Snapdragon 845 will power most flagship phones this year and that it has the Snapdragon X20 LTE modem on board, it’s easy to think of the X24 LTE modem as part and parcel of the Snapdragon 855 chipset.
According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon X24 LTE modem is capable of up to 2Gbps downlink speeds, up from 1.2Gbps managed by the X20 LTE modem used in the Snapdragon 845. As per Qualcomm’s careful wording, it’s safe to believe that true 5G won’t be here until after the X24 and Snapdragon 855. Instead, the upcoming chipset will be “strengthening the LTE foundation for future 5G” by “featuring the most advanced cellular features of any commercially available 4G LTE modem to date.”
In comparison, the latest LTE modem from Intel dubbed XMM7060, which will most probably be used in this year’s iPhones, has a maximum download speed of 1.6Gbps. So, if your carrier is capable of supporting such connectivity speeds, you’ll be better positioned to get the fastest speeds when using the Galaxy S10 compared to the iPhone 9, for instance.
Since the Snapdragon 855 is expected to power some variants of the Galaxy S10 and S10+, you can be sure that the pair will be among the closest devices to the 5G network, which most carriers are pegged to start offering in 2019.
Qualcomm will be at the MWC 2018 event to showcase its latest Snapdragon X24 LTE modem and hopefully, we’ll get to learn a few more things about the Snapdragon 855 chipset as well.
