Nokia-Android-9-Pie

HMD Global was among the first non-Google smartphone vendors to begin the official rollout of Android 9 Pie back in September 2018. As of this writing, the company has at least eight devices running Pie, although one of them, the Nokia 8.1, runs the new OS out of the box.

So far, Pie is already available for the Nokia 8 and 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 7.1, Nokia 6.1 and 6.1 Plus, as well as the Nokia 5.1 Plus. To calm down the many concerned owners of the remaining HMD-Nokia portfolio, the company has announced an official Android Pie roadmap that we have detailed below.

Nokia 5 and Nokia 3.1 Plus to get Pie this week

According to HMD Global’s chief product officer, Juho Sarvikas, Android 9 Pie will begin rolling out to the Nokia 5 and Nokia 3.1 Plus before the end of this week. This should explain why the latter recently appeared on Geekbench running Pie.

Nokia 6, Nokia 5.1, Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 2.1 to follow soon after

After the Nokia 5 and 3.1 Plus, HMD will turn its immediate attention to the Nokia 6, with Sarvikas noting that Pie will be released to the device once Dolby implementation is complete. This could be somewhere in February.

As for the Nokia 5.1, Nokia 3.1, and Nokia 2.1, Pie will be ready within Q1 2019, but we don’t have a specific date.

Nokia 3 and Nokia 1 to join the party in Q2 2019

Users of the Nokia 3 and Nokia 1 will also get Android Pie, but the wait will go all the way to early Q2 2019. Unlike the former, the latter will be getting a toned-down version of Pie dubbed the Go Edition to match the devices hardware configuration.

Nokia 2 is still stuck on Android Oreo beta

In case you didn’t notice, the original Nokia 2 is missing from the list provided by HMD. As of this writing, the phone is still testing Android Oreo beta and has no known release date for the now out of favor OS. Whether this omission means there won’t be Pie for the Nokia 2 is also unclear, but we hope HMD lives up to its promise of rolling out at least two major OS upgrades to all of its devices.

Whether the Finnish duo will first release beta versions of Android Pie to these devices before the stable versions is still unclear. But looking at what happened with Oreo, a beta program is likely on the cards.
