Custom Rom is the aftermarket firmware which can be installed in android phones to get more features, stability, upgrade device to newer android version if manufacturer abandon the device and lots more.
Do I Need a Custom ROM?
This answer is definately if you don't care about warranty and want more from your smartphone you should definitely root your device.
