Google announced the Google Lens feature during Google I/O earlier this year. This is the successor to the Google Goggles feature of the yesteryear, but is much more advanced and smarter. The feature was already present in Google Photos on the Pixel 2 devices during launch. The first generation Pixel phones also got the feature in Google Photos. However, some users are now seeing Lens enabled in Google Assistant on both the Pixel and Pixel 2 devices.
The search giant did promise that the feature would be rolled out in the coming weeks. It seems to be a server side upgrade, as users didn’t have to update the Google app. Also, some users are seeing this feature on the Android 8.1 Developer Preview.

An user on Reddit posted that upon firing Google Assistant, a new Lens icon is available on the bottom. Tapping on this icon will launch the camera viewfinder inside the Assistant view.
You can then scan an object, restaurant, product, or pretty much anything, and immediately see results via Assistant. And this works really well.

As of now, the feature is only available for the Pixel and Pixel 2 smartphones. Yes, you can get it on other devices with root, but not officially. We are not sure if Google will make this available for other devices, but that could happen. For those with a Pixel or Pixel 2 device, you should soon see this feature when you launch Google Assistant.
