Soon enough, the MWC 2018 event will begin in Spain’s city of Barcelona, once again giving smartphone enthusiasts a chance to meet some of the best handsets of the year for the first time. However, one notable device that will not be showcased at the event is the Huawei P20, the successor to the P10.

Last year, Huawei was at the MWC to unveil the P10 series and everyone expected that the Huawei P20 will also be announced at this month’s event. However, Huawei has other ideas. In fact, the company has ensured that every fan out there knows the launch date of the P20 way ahead of time. But why?

To make the launch certain and known

A lot has been floating around regarding the Huawei P20. Details started showing up as early as May 2017 – back when we thought of the device as Huawei P11 – but as of this writing, we know a great deal of specs and features that the P20 will come with.

Of course, the company should be well aware of everything that’s out there too, including expectations that the P20 will be launched at the MWC 2018. To clear the air and make it certain that the Huawei P20 is on course as any big-name company would do, the tech giant went ahead and gave us a specific date, which makes it easier to wait for the users interested in the phone as it assures them of a launch date.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ are the most anticipated smartphones of the year and as you’d expect, a lot of hype has been building around their launch. The two stand in the way of P20’s success and to ensure that fans don’t forget about its expected launch, Huawei had to take the bull by the horns.

After missing last year’s MWC event following prolonged works on the Galaxy S8 and S8+ thanks to the Galaxy Note 7 debacle, Samsung will be back at this year’s event with the Galaxy S9 and S9+. Arguably the best phones that’ll grace the year 2018, the level of attention the S9 pair will command at the MWC 2018 will definitely be unmeasurable.

In fact, it can already be felt weeks ahead of launch. The kind of hype around the launch of the Galaxy S9 and S9+ is way different compared to any other device, including the Huawei P20. If anything, the S9 will steal the show and eclipse any other launch at the event and Huawei doesn’t want this for a phone it has spent millions and millions to build.

By holding an isolated event at a later time, Huawei believes that the P20 will get maximum exposure and attention, especially since all the hype around the Galaxy S9 and S9+ will have cooled down. In fact, this is one of the major reasons, not just the Huawei P20, but also the HTC U12, LG G7 and Xiaomi Mi 7 won’t be unveiled at this year’s event.

There’s too much going on at the MWC

Being the biggest mobile tech show on earth, the MWC is always a busy place with every company looking for a spot/chance to showcase to the world what they have been working on since the last event. With this in mind, it has become a common ground where the biggest tech companies come to launch their first flagship phones of the year – and one of them is Samsung.

Given their close rivalry, Huawei wouldn’t want the P20 to be overshadowed by the Galaxy S9 and S9+ launch. Furthermore, it’s not just Samsung that will be at the event. Other OEMs such as Sony, Asus, Lenovorola, HMD and so on, will also be at the event to unveil their latest and greatest devices.

Being one of the MWC’s biggest sponsors, Huawei will still be at this year’s event, but the launch of the Huawei P20, Huawei P20 Plus and Huawei P20 Lite will have to wait until March 27.

What do you think? Has Huawei done the right thing by postponing the release to March 27?

Does it make you feel good to know that Huawei P20 is scheduled for release by March-end?
