It’s been years since Samsung refreshed its line of NX cameras, but the latest rumors suggest the Korean company could be poised to give it another try with a new high-end APS-C camera that will use the same Exynos 9810 chipset set to debut on the Galaxy S9 and S9+.
According to a report by Mirrorless Rumors, it appears that the company is internally testing what would be the Samsung NX2 camera, the successor to the NX1 that was unveiled in 2014. However, there’s no way we can confirm that this is the real deal, especially since Samsung has on several occasions been thought to have exited the high-end mirrorless camera business.
So, what is out there regarding the alleged Samsung NX2 camera? Read on.
Samsung NX2 specs and features
- 30.1MP ISOCELL lens with Dual Pixel Autofocus
- Exynos 9810 chipset
- 4K 120fps h/265 encode capability
- Bluetooth 5.0
- eSIM LTE connectivity
- USB-C with uncompressed output of up to 5K at 60fps
Samsung’s NX1 was the first in the APS-C camera business to debut DCI 4K video recording alongside 205 on-chip autofocus with 15 frames per second burst. However, after recording poor sales, the company allegedly bid goodbye to the camera business, with all the operations being handed over to Samsung Mobile division.
As pointed out earlier, the rumored Samsung NX2 will join the Galaxy S9 twins in rocking the Exynos 9810 SoC, which the rumor says will ensure super-fast readout and 4K 120fps h/265 encode capability that delivers impressive framerates.
In addition, the NX2 is rumored to come with the following features:
- 1MP stacked (3-stack FRS) ISOCELL sensor with Tetracell and dual-pixel autofocus
- Accelerometer-based shutter
- 15fps burst with mechanical shutter
- LTE support with eSIM, GNSS for location tagging
- Bluetooth 5.0
- SD 3.0 for memory cards with up to 300MB/s
- Wi-Fi 802.11ac with 2×2 MIMO
- DP-enabled USB-C 3.1 for uncompressed output of up to 4K at 60fps and 5K at 30fps.
Apparently, the rumor says Samsung Mobile has retrofitted an NX1 camera with new internals, which says just about nothing regarding the supposed design of the high-end APS-C NX2 camera. However, it shouldn’t be strange considering this is just a rumor.
It’s also possible Samsung could be considering reusing the materials meant for the underperforming NX1 to save costs while at the same time test the waters and see how the market reacts to the “new” camera before going full-blown. Only time will tell.
Samsung NX2 Camera price and release date
- No confirmed launch date
- No price details available so far
If this rumor is indeed true, there’s no doubt that Samsung is working on a really great NX1 successor. However, given the company’s prolonged stay away from the mirrorless camera business, it seems too good to be true.
As pointed out, the poor market performance of the NX1, which is by all means still one of the best out there, forced Samsung out of the business. The rumor claims that Samsung Mobile is behind the resurrection of the now-defunct NX camera and since the division will be at the upcoming MWC 2018 event to unveil the S9 and S9+, we might as well get lucky to hear some details about this camera.
Still, it’s worth noting that this is not the first time we’ve heard related rumors and none materialized. At some point, it was rumored that Nikon would be buying Samsung’s camera division, but it never happened. With this in mind, there’s little significance in talking up the price of the rumored Samsung NX2 camera.
On the brighter side, you can still purchase the NX1 camera on Amazon, with price tags going as high as $2,460. If anything, this should give you a rough idea of what the NX2 would cost if it indeed materialized. But for now, be sure to treat this as a rumor.
