Under the wing of HMD Global, the veteran of the mobile industry, Nokia is moving forward with all the momentum. A large part of Nokia’s success so far has been a lineup that not only caters to the flagship users with the Nokia 8, but the budget-restricted folks with the Nokia 2. With the Mobile World Congress soon approaching, the Finnish company is once again looking to outperform against the competition.

We reported a while back that Nokia is working on bringing the Android Go platform with the Nokia 1. As we reach closer to the grand unveiling, the rumored specs and a fair bit of revealing information from the certifications help paint a clearer picture of the device. We’ve stitched together all of the information out there about the cheapest Nokia Android phone yet.

Nokia 1 specs and features

  • Android 8.0 Oreo, Go Edition (highlight feature!)
  • 5-inch IPS LCD display with HD 720p resolution
  • Processor not known yet
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB internal storage
  • MicroSD card support
  • Dual-SIM with VoLTE support

Just a tad bit smaller in screen size compared to the Nokia 2, the upcoming Nokia 1 is expected to tout a similar 720 x 1280 resolution HD display. There’s no update on what processor will be placed at the heart of the device, but based on the price point, it’ll most likely come as a low-powered MediaTek SoC.

The most consistent fact across all the leaks has been the presence of Android 8.0 Oreo (Go edition), which is the lightweight variant of the latest Android version. The biggest attraction on the software front will most likely be lightweight apps that offer the entire Android OS experience on a smaller budget.

Nokia 1 has also been spotted on the FCC website, sporting the model number TA-1071, and here’s what it highlights:

  • 13mm x 50mm x 136 mm (smaller than the Nokia 2).
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • 4G LTE
  • Wi-Fi 2.4GHz

Thanks to Evan Blass, we now have a better understanding of what the Nokia 1 will look like and what physical features can be expected. The Nokia 1 will come with a front and back camera with an LED flash, along with a 3.5mm headphone jack and rear-positioned speaker. There’s not much to tell what the camera hardware would be, but considering the affordable price tag, expect nothing spectacular.

Nokia 1 price and release date

  • Launch expected at MWC 2018
  • Expected to be the first Nokia device under $100

Although HMD Global has made no formal announcement, Nokia 1 is expected to take the center stage at MWC 2018 in Barcelona next week. The device is expected to release side-by-side with the 4G edition of the legendary Nokia 3310, along with newer Android variants.

The entire premise of an Android Go smartphone is extensive affordability, and that’s what we expect of the Nokia 1. A Russian leak suggests that the upcoming mobile phone could be priced around RUB 5,990, which is just above the $100 mark.

Google’s latest word on Android Go suggests that there will be more than one device running their lightweight version of Oreo at MWC 2018. However, the resurrected popularity of the Nokia brand is sure to drive people in hoards towards the Nokia 1, especially in the high-density markets like India, Brazil, and China.
