Samsung Galaxy S9 is the 2018 flagship phone from the Korean company that is tasked with succeeding the impressive Galaxy S8 from last year. The S9 has officially taken over from the S8 as far as Samsung’s software updates priorities are concerned.
Just like the Galaxy S8 is at the forefront when it comes to receiving Android 8.0 Oreo updates, the story will be the same for the Galaxy S9 when Android 9.0 P starts rolling out. While Oreo started rolling out in August 2017, it has taken Samsung until February 2018 to start rolling out the stable version of the OS to the S8.
Now that Samsung Galaxy S9 comes with support for Google’s Project Treble, we expect to see some improvements in software updates from Samsung’s end. This, however, doesn’t guarantee that the S9 will get Android 9.0 before this year ends, but it’s our hope that it does!
Android P 9.0 update
When will Galaxy S9 receive Android P update? Well, it will definitely get Android P (9.0 most probably). But it won’t be anytime soon. Read on to know more.
- Android P eligible
- To arrive later this year
Samsung Galaxy S9 | Launch OS | Current OS | Android P 9.0 |
Global Unlocked | Android 8.0 Oreo | Android 8.0 Oreo | Expected (Dec 2018) |
AT&T | Android 8.0 Oreo | Android 8.0 Oreo | Expected (Feb 2019) |
Sprint | Android 8.0 Oreo | Android 8.0 Oreo | Expected (Feb 2019) |
T-Mobile | Android 8.0 Oreo | Android 8.0 Oreo | Expected (Feb 2019) |
Verizon | Android 8.0 Oreo | Android 8.0 Oreo | Expected (Feb 2019) |
U.S. Unlocked | Android 8.0 Oreo | Android 8.0 Oreo | Expected (Jan 2019) |
Google is expected to begin the developer preview program in March, just like it happened last year. Even though there’s a lot of hype around Project Treble, it’s unlikely to make any significant changes, especially since a lot still depends on the willingness and resources an OEM can put together towards this course.
We don’t want to get your hopes too high, but you can expect Android P 9.0 to be available, officially or unofficially, towards the end of this year, especially for the global unlocked variant with model number SM-G960F. As for the U.S. variants, both carrier and unlocked, the update may arrive afterward, perhaps even in February or March 2019, which should also be the case with Canadian variants.
The locals in South Korea could also be among the first consumers to get Android P 9.0 on their Galaxy S9 handsets alongside the global unlocked model. Although none of these is official, it’s our hope that Samsung will be through with rolling out Android P updates to all S9 handsets across the globe by the end of Q1 2019.
