The LG G7 ThinQ was unveiled in May 2018 but it appears that its successor, LG G8 ThinQ, will get an early launch, probably at the upcoming MWC 2019 event. This is according to the latest developments that have also given us a better idea of what’s coming.

Thanks to the XDA Developers, we now know quite a number of things about one of LG’s 2019 flagship phones. If the leaked renders are to be believed, the G8 ThinQ will stick to mostly the same design language as its predecessor.

We are looking at a notched display screen that many are doing away with in favor of a more appealing waterdrop or teardrop-style design, but LG seems to have its own justifications for including this huge cutout in the display.

The notch houses the selfie camera alongside a number of other sensors that suggest the LG G8 could support hardware-based facial recognition. The LG V40 was rumored to come with a 3D facial recognition mechanism, but it didn’t and instead uses the front camera and software.

It’s even more interesting that the G8’s notch doesn’t house the earpiece like in the case of the V40 and G7 (see close-up image below), with LG opting to go with “Sound on Display” technology that is supposed to vibrate the phone’s display and in the process produce sound.

That’s pretty cool from LG, but this is definitely not enough to make up for missing out on things like an in-display fingerprint scanner and the chance to go with a better-looking notch alternative like the hole-punch design we see on the Galaxy A8s, Huawei Nova 4, Huawei View 20 and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10. But then again, this is not the final product we are seeing in these renders, at least according to head of global communications for consumer electronics at LG, Ken Hong.

Previous reports had suggested that the LG G8 will ship with a 6.1-inch QHD+ display with a 19.5: 9 aspect ratio, a Snapdragon 855 processor allied to 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. We don’t have specs of the dual-lens camera on the back, but the renders do reveal the arrangement of the sensors will take after the V40 and not the G7.

LG is also expected to keep using a super-wide lens, a USB-C port, a 3.5mm audio jack, as well as the tech that made the G7 a go-to device for audiophiles.
